McAfee could be sold to a group of private equity firms for more than ten billion dollars, according to a media report. The deal with financial investors like Advent and Permira, who would rate McAfee at around $ 25 per share, could be announced on Monday, wrote the Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter.
McAfee shares then shot up around a fifth to $ 25.46 in late US trading on Friday. The company only returned to the stock market in October 2020 after it was acquired by Intel in 2010 for $ 7.7 billion and initially operated as McAfee and later as “Intel Security”. In 2017, Intel sold the area. At the time, it went to the financial investor TGP for $ 3.1 billion, while Intel retained a 49 percent stake.
The company separated in March 2021 for $ 4 billion from its corporate division. The buyer was the Symphony Technology Group. This news was also well received by investors: the share initially rose by more than ten percent in New York trading. The transaction was completed in July 2021. The area sold has since appeared as McAfee Enterprise on the market. The area that is now for sale therefore only includes the as McAfee operating private customer division.
Founded in 1987, McAfee is one of the pioneers in the IT security industry, also known through its eccentric founder John McAfee. Apart from the name, the company has had nothing to do with that since the 1990s. In 2020, US judicial authorities brought charges against the antivirus pioneer of fraud with cryptocurrencies and conspiracy to launder money. He was then imprisoned in Spain in October 2010 and died in a Spanish prison in June 2021. (dpa / pma)
