He congratulated its Emir with the humanitarian award.. The commander of the US Central Command praises Qatar’s “exceptional” role during the withdrawal from Afghanistan
The Commander of the US Central Command, General Kenneth McKenzie, praised what he described as the exceptional humanitarian role played by the State of Qatar during the US withdrawal from Afghanistan at the end of last August.
This came during McKenzie’s speech at the 30th annual conference of Arab and American policy makers, following the announcement by the National Council on American-Arab Relations in Washington that the Global Humanitarian Action Award was awarded to the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
“I am pleased to congratulate His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on receiving the Global Humanitarian Award for the year 2021. His Highness… this award is well deserved,” McKenzie said during the conference, which was organized by the Council via video link on Wednesday and Thursday.
“The greatest evidence of your humanitarian leadership is what you gave during the humanitarian crisis that resulted from the collapse of the Afghan government in August. Thanks to the decisive measures you took and your cooperation, we and a number of other partners were able to evacuate more than 120,000 people at risk from the war-torn land,” he said. “.
Qatar has worked with the United Nations, Washington and international partners to secure safe passage for civilians, journalists and diplomats out of Afghanistan, in conjunction with the withdrawal of US forces, which was completed at the end of last August.
In addition to Doha’s mediating role between Western powers and the Taliban, the Qatari armed forces have evacuated hundreds of Afghan civilians, including families, women, children, academics and journalists.
About a week ago, Qatar and the United States signed an agreement under which Doha will represent and protect American diplomatic interests in Afghanistan, and the foreign ministers of the two countries affirmed from Washington to strengthen partnership on regional issues.
And US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that his country is about to establish a unit inside the Qatari embassy in Afghanistan to provide US consular services.
