Symbolic celebrations of the 78th anniversary of Lebanon’s independence

The severe political and economic crisis in Lebanon left its effects on the 78th anniversary of its independence from France, as the celebrations held yesterday in Beirut on this occasion seemed symbolic on both the official and popular levels.

The traditional military parade in the center of the capital was canceled for the third year in a row due to the economic and health conditions. Instead, the Lebanese Ministry of Defense held a mini-military parade at its headquarters in Yarzeh near Beirut, attended by Lebanese President Michel Aoun, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Najib Mikati, while Ministerial attendance was limited to the Ministers of Defense and Interior, and members of Parliament and representatives of the diplomatic corps in Lebanon were not invited.
