Leaders of the Islamic Jihad and Islamic Resistance Movements (Hamas) in Gaza held an emergency meeting to discuss the deterioration of the health of the prisoner, Hisham Abu Hawash, who is on hunger strike.

Sources told Al Jazeera that the meeting included political and military leaders in the two movements, and discussed the factions’ options in dealing with the possible outcomes of the Abu Hawash strike.

Al-Jihad movement has previously threatened to escalate and respond to any possible assassination of the prisoner Abu Hawash.

The Secretary-General of the Jihad Movement, Ziyad Al-Nakhala, said that the death of Abu Hawash as a result of a hunger strike without responding to his demands would be considered an assassination and targeting by the Israeli occupation that requires a response.

The Palestinian Prisoners Affairs Authority had announced that Abu Hawash is in a serious condition, approaching death every minute, and that the doctors at the “Asaf Harofeh Hospital”, south of Tel Aviv, were talking clearly about the possibility of his sudden death.

Abu Hawash has been on a hunger strike for 140 days to protest his administrative detention, which has caused his health to deteriorate.

Israel arrested Abu Hawash on October 27, 2020, and transferred him to administrative detention.

And administrative detention, a decision to imprison by an Israeli military order, for a period of up to 6 months, subject to extension, on the grounds of a security threat, without trial or indictment.
