The broadcasting authority said that a delegation of Egyptian officers arrived in Israel this morning to hold talks with senior Israeli officials on the rehabilitation of the Gaza Strip, and to try to advance the issue of prisoners and missing persons.

Negotiations and mediation

Egypt is mediating indirect talks between Israel and the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) regarding a ceasefire, the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, and the exchange of prisoners.

There was no official Israeli or Egyptian official announcement of this visit.

On the ninth of last December, the Egyptian presidency said – after a meeting in Cairo between Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid – that Egypt is continuing its efforts to rebuild Gaza and prevent tension between the Palestinian and Israeli sides.

The presidency added – in a statement – that Sisi assured Lapid to continue efforts to achieve peace on the basis of the two-state solution.

The Israeli foreign minister said he had presented the Egyptian president with Israel’s plan for the economy in exchange for security in Gaza.

Egypt and Israel have been bound by a peace treaty since 1979, but this peace is usually described as cold at the Egyptian popular level.

Of the 22 Arab countries, 5 other Arab countries have declared official relations with Israel. These countries are Jordan, the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco.
