Antivirus & Firewall: Android protection apps for companies in the test

The Magdeburg AV-Test Institute in November again tested mobile protection solutions for professional Android devices that their manufacturers had submitted for certification. After the previous certification test only ESET participated, this time three products competed again: Dr.Web Enterprise Security Suite, ESET Endpoint Security and Total Defense Premium Internet Security SMB. Google Play Protect was also tested here for comparison. Since the beginning of 2020, AV-Test has distinguished between Apps for personal devices and protection solutions for companies.

This is how it is tested

The tests are divided into the three categories of protection, performance and usability. On the one hand, protection against malware is tested with over 2,600 malware samples that are no older than four weeks. On the other hand, in the so-called real-time tests, all apps are simultaneously confronted with more than 3,300 copies of the latest malware on identical smartphones. Any impairments in battery life, the braking effect on the system and the data traffic generated by the protection apps are included in the performance rating. For usability, the false alarms that the protection solutions produce for 1234 harmless apps are determined.

Protection programs that achieve a total of ten out of a possible 18 points and at least one point in each category receive a certificate. The tests are always performed on real hardware (no emulator) running Android 8.0.0. The test candidates can access the latest updates and cloud services at any time.

The three apps tested met the minimum requirements for a certificate, but missed the full 18 points. Eset and Total Defense detect well over 99.0 percent of malware in both sub-tests, but none of the products detects all malware. Eset Endpoint Security and Total Defense Premium Internet Security lose half a point as a result. Dr.Web remains below 98 percent detection in both sub-tests. Google Play Protect is far behind at around 60 percent and does not get any points for malware detection.
