Dr. Mohamed Mesbah, a Tunisian scientist and professor of computer science at the University of Bordeaux, received the Research and Innovation Award for the year 2021, in recognition of the outstanding results he reached with his team to develop intelligent transportation within the framework of the academic and industrial chair project that he supervises.

The project was chosen from among 80 scientific projects that participated in the competition to win the award, which it oversees annually Purdue University FoundationThe results were announced last December.

Who is Mohamed Mesbah?

Doctor محمد مصباح He is Professor of Computer Science at the Institut Polytechnique de Bordeaux, the most prestigious engineering school in France, and also serves as Vice President of the Institute responsible for digital transformations.

Muhammad Misbah was born in the town of Ras al-Shamekh in the state of Mahdia in central Tunisia. He obtained his baccalaureate (high school) with distinction that enabled him to obtain a grant from the Tunisian government to complete his studies in France, where he obtained an engineer’s degree in media and then a doctorate from Bordeaux University in 1993.

He worked as an assistant professor at the same university until 2004, and became a professor of computer science after obtaining the qualification to manage research. He currently holds an exceptional second-class university professor degree.

Mosbah conducts his research at the Bordeaux Computer Science Research Laboratory, a joint research laboratory between Bordeaux University and the French National Center for Research (CNRS). Areas of such research include distributed systems and algorithms, intelligent transportation systems, cybersecurity and wireless networks. He has a credit of more than 280 scientific articles published, supervised dozens of doctoral theses, and developed many software tools.

Artificial intelligence in the service of intelligent transportation

In 2019, an academic and industrial chair was established under the supervision of Dr. Mosbah to research innovative solutions for mobility and smart transportation at Bordeaux University, and included a team of researchers along with industrial and social partners to search for solutions to the problem of mobility in Bordeaux and all major cities that suffer from this dilemma.

In an exclusive interview he gave to Al-Jazeera Net through the “Zoom” application, Muhammad Misbah said that “the project aims to find smart solutions using artificial intelligence to problems of traffic congestion and improve road safety while reducing pollution and preserving the environment.” In this context, researchers seek to design and study connected vehicle networks, in addition to investigating security and safety issues within these networks.

Mohamed Mesbah and his team have developed smart systems that rely on connecting self-driving vehicles, sensors and surveillance cameras to a network whose data is processed using artificial intelligence.

These systems are able to “anticipate traffic jams before they occur, allowing road users to avoid or avoid them,” says Mosbah, who adds that “the research conducted by the team also demonstrated the effectiveness of smart systems in anticipating traffic jams by up to 95%, and in reducing traffic jams by 95%. Traffic accidents by more than 80%, in addition to reducing pollution resulting from traffic congestion by 30%.”

As part of this project, which won the Research and Innovation Award last year, the Tunisian researcher and his team are working on testing new promising solutions to the problem of mobility and traffic congestion using intelligent transportation systems, including self-driving and connected trains, and connected traffic lights, in addition to enhancing the information safety of vehicles.
