The network and IT security manufacturer Check Point according to its own statements, a technological leap in firewalls has been achieved. Future models will be based on the new Quantum Lightspeed technology. The company announced that this should enable high-end speeds of up to 3 TBit/s with extremely low latency times of just 3 microseconds.
Check Point describes the new technology primarily in superlatives. Firewalls represent “the biggest revolution in network security in the last decade”. Among other things, this is due to the fact that the firewall throughput has been increased fivefold. The latencies have been reduced tenfold, while the price-performance ratio is said to be twenty times better than competing solutions.
Quantum Lightspeed uses an ASIC technology developed by Nvidia that can transfer terabytes of data in minutes rather than hours. The new solutions would “work in the most demanding data centers that have high throughput and require low latency,” said Dorit Dor, Check Point’s chief product officer.

The new Check Point Quantum Lightspeed Security Gateways are scheduled to be available immediately. The manufacturer is initially bringing four models onto the market, the QLS250, QLS450, QLS650 and the QLS800. The number in the name quantifies the firewall throughput in GBit/s, which the devices achieve according to the manufacturer.
They are equipped with two to eight 100 GB Ethernet ports and eight connections for 10 GB Ethernet (except for the QLS800). In the rack, they require two or three height units (U). Several of the gateways can be combined via Check Point Castro so that, according to the manufacturer, the mentioned 3 TBit/s can also be achieved.
