With the participation of 1073 publishers.. the opening of the 53rd session of the Cairo International Book Fair

The Cairo International Book Fair launched its 53rd session today, Wednesday, at the Egypt International Exhibition Center, with the participation of 1073 Egyptian, Arab and foreign publishers and agencies from 51 countries.

Thus, the exhibition regains its previous position in the annual map of international exhibitions, after it held its previous session in the year 2021, exceptionally, in the summer due to the Corona virus pandemic.

The exhibition was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Culture Minister Enas Abdel Dayem, Head of the Egyptian General Book Organization Haitham El-Hajj Ali, and a number of Arab and foreign ambassadors and diplomats in Egypt. The exhibition receives its audience starting tomorrow, Thursday.

Arab and foreign participation

The Saudi Press Agency stated that the Kingdom is participating in the Cairo International Book Fair this year through 39 publishing houses that offer the latest books and publications, as well as participating in the exhibition’s cultural and artistic activities.

As for the Algerian Ministry of Culture and Arts, it said – in a statement – that more than 600 titles of books and publications for Algerian publishing houses will participate in the exhibition, in addition to the presence of 7 writers and poets. The Sultanate of Oman will participate in the exhibition, represented by the Ministries of Culture and Sports and Youth and Information, with a number of publications aimed at introducing Omani culture and highlighting Omani intellectual production.

The session, which continues until February 7, will raise the slogan “Egypt’s identity, culture and the question of the future”, while the late writer Yehia Hakki was chosen as the “personality of the exhibition” this year.

Greece will be the “Guest of Honor” for the exhibition through a rich cultural program, which includes a discussion of a number of publications and translated works on the ancient Greek and Egyptian civilizations.

This year, the fair will host, as part of its cultural program, a group of Egyptian writers, thinkers and poets; Among them are Najeeb Al-Hasadi, Ibrahim Issa, Salwa Bakr and Ahmed Al-Shahawi, in addition to celebrating the centenary of the birth of some figures; Such as the musician Kamal Al-Taweel (1922-2003) and Sheikh Abu Al-Enein Shuaisha (1922-2011). The program also includes a meeting with the Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Mostafa Elfeki, a poetry evening by the poet Zine El Abidine Fouad, and a symposium entitled “The visual identity of the book and the evolution of the art of cover design.”

In conjunction with the exhibition, the Egyptian General Book Organization is launching the “Digital Book” project, which begins with the “Ancient Egypt” encyclopedia of the famous archaeologist Selim Hassan.

The exhibition dedicates a separate hall to children’s books and activities, with the works of the late author, translator and publisher Abdel Tawab Youssef (1928-2015) at the fore.

The activities of the exhibition are also accompanied by a professional program of 7 axes aimed at developing and developing the publishing industry and its mechanisms and upgrading the Arab cultural product, and includes a series of discussion sessions and workshops.

The Arab Publishers Association is holding its general assembly on the sidelines of the exhibition on January 30, which includes the election of a new board of directors for the union.

The exhibition had earlier announced the creation of an award for the best Arab publisher, as well as raising the financial value of its annual awards in the fields of story, novel, poetry, literary criticism and human studies.
