The UAE defeats Syria and enhances its chances of running in the Asian playoff qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar

The UAE boosted its chances of running in the Asian playoffs in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifiers, with a 2-0 victory over Syria, in Dubai on Thursday.

This Gulf team, which participated in the World Cup once in 1990, raised its score to 9 points to remain in third place in the first group.

Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk’s team has 4 points ahead of Lebanon, and 6 points over Iraq, 3 rounds before the end.

Iran secured qualification by taking the lead in the group with 19 points, two points ahead of South Korea, which waited for the UAE to stumble to book the qualification ticket today.

The first two teams from the first and second groups qualify directly for the finals in Qatar, while the two third-placed teams will meet in an Asian playoff to determine the team that will compete in the international playoffs.

Caio Canedo gave the Emirates lead from a close-range header after a perfect cross pass from Khalil Ibrahim, two minutes before the end of the first half.

Yahya Al Ghassani added the second goal after an exchange of the ball with Caio in the 72nd minute, and the goal was initially canceled before the Video Assistant Referee System (VAR) confirmed its validity.

Syria’s balance stopped at two points in last place.
