Egypt qualified for the final of the 33rd edition of the African Nations Cup, after beating Cameroon – the host of the tournament – on penalties, 3-1, in the meeting that was held at the Olympic Stadium in the Cameroonian capital, Yaounde.
The “Pharaohs” will play the final match next Sunday at the same stadium against Senegal, who qualified for the final after defeating Burkina Faso 3-1.
The Egyptian team will have an opportunity to enhance its record in the number of times crowning the African Nations Cup, and it currently has 7 titles, surpassing Cameroon, which won the tournament 5 times, and then the Ghanaian team, which won the African Championship 4 times.
The team set a new record after its victory over Cameroon, as it qualified for the final for the tenth time in history, to break the partnership with Ghana, which was equal with Egypt in the number of times to reach the final match of the Cannes with 9 times each.
In 9 continental finals that the Egyptian national team participated in, the Pharaohs won the title 7 times, in the years: 1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010. He lost the final of the tournament twice, in 1962 against Ethiopia, and in 2017 against Cameroon.
Among the gains made by the Pharaohs by reaching the final match of the Cannes, the financial prize that will be harvested by the two parties to the continental final, after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) decided before the start of the tournament to increase the financial prizes for the competition, where the team crowned with the title will receive 5 million dollars, an increase of half a million dollars Compared to the previous tournament, the runner-up will earn $2,750,000.
The performance of the Egyptian team improved with the success of matches in the tournament, and on its way to the final, it succeeded in eliminating 3 teams that were candidates for the title, namely the Ivory Coast, Morocco and Cameroon.
